Exhibiting at Green Fest

We welcome grassroots organizations, political organizations, non-profit groups, renewable energy suppliers, booksellers, farmers with local produce and local craftspeople as exhibitors at Green Fest. Exhibitors on Saturday, Aug. 11 pay the $25 admission fee. There is no additional charge for exhibiting. Exhibitors may sell at Cayuta Sun on Saturday. Exhibitors on Sunday, Aug. 12 on the Ithaca Commons may not sell. There is no fee for exhibiting on Sunday.

Make Your Own Small Wind Turbine

On Saturday, August 11, Barry Miller will lead a workshop on how to make your own small wind turbine. Barry is a mechanical engineer with a BSME from the University of Ariz, Tucson. He has used wind and solar power off and on since 1976. Barry spent 20 years in the wind energy business, nine years of which he spent operating a wind farm in Altamont Pass west of San Franciso. In 2001 he was an engineer for a company manufacturing 750 Kw wind turbines. Barry recently taught a class at Olean BOCES on how to build your own small wind turbine. Barry is from Hinsdale, NY and is active in the Cattaraugus County Green Party.

2007 Perseid Meteor Shower

Camping out at NY Green Fest will give good opportunities to view the Perseid Meteor Shower. It is one of the best meteor showers of the year. 2007 is a good year for viewing the Perseid Shower because the moon is new on Sun., Aug. 12, the night the shower will be at its peak. Perseid meteors fly out of the constellation Perseus, hence their name. The best time to watch is during the hours before sunrise when Perseus is high in the sky. Watch the meteors between 2 a.m. and dawn.

The source of the shower is Comet Swift-Tuttle. Although the comet is not near Earth, the comet's wide tail intersects Earth's orbit. Tiny bits of comet dust hit Earth's atmosphere traveling 132,000 mph. At that speed, even a tiny smidgen of dust makes a vivid streak of light--a meteor--when it disintegrates. The shower is most intense when Earth is in the dustiest part of the tail.

Camping at Robert Treman State Park

Camping for the weekend is available at Robert H. Treman State Park, 12 miles from Cayuta Sun. According to the park website, the park is an area of wild beauty, with the rugged gorge called Enfield Glen as its scenic highlight. Winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge as it winds its way to the lower park. Campers can choose from tent or RV sites or cabins. Enjoy nine miles of hiking trails, or swim in a stream-fed pool beneath a waterfall. Swimming is allowed in lifeguarded area only. A campsite on Friday or Saturday night is $18.75 for the first night, $13.00 each additional night. Six people, two cars, two tents are allowed per campsite.
